The NYSC temporary orientation camp in Paikoro, Niger State, was on Monday invaded by hoodlums who carted away corps members’ properties.
According to reports, the robbers struck as early as 6am when the corps members were preparing to leave the camp to their place of primary assignment.
The robbers made away with stolen include fans, mattresses and bed sheets.
Sources state that the robbers pretended to be NYSC official’s until they were found out and alarm was raised which alerted security agents in the camp.
The security agents were able to arrest a suspect in connection with the theft while some stolen items were traced to the staff quarters of the Government Secondary School.
Items recovered includd six fans that were purchased for the male and female hostels.
Niger state NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Theresa Arokoyo, said such an incident would not have occurred if the NYSC had a permanent orientation camp in the state, adding that this is not the first time such will occur.
“This development always compels the NYSC authority to spend extra money each time we resume for orientation,’’ she said.
Niger State Acting Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Ketso, said that the government was making efforts to ensure that the permanent orientation camp is ready before the end of 2017.
